We were up early for a 6:00 a.m. departure on our Chitwan National Park safari. Chitwan is famous for the one-horned rhinoceros and the royal bengal tiger. It is still the rainy season in Nepal and much of the park is inaccessible. We came close to seeing a rhinoceros, passing by fresh rhino dung and footprints, but never did see one.
The park is home to hundreds of species of birds. We saw stork, peacocks, kingfishers,eagles, egrets and more. There are many crocodiles resting in the the waters with their snouts just above the water line. Our safari guide, Sanjay, told us about a local man who was killed by a crocodile while fishing by the side of a river just a few weeks ago. The spotted deer were also abundant, though we missed seeing the cobras and anacondas.
