It’s Not All Work: Cayos Cuchinos

Cayos Cuchinos

Cayos Cuchinos is a small group of islands and keys just off the coast of Atlántida, the state where I have been staying.  It is also a national park, and many have described it as the most beautiful place they have ever seen.  I spent a day there snorkeling, hiking in search of the pink boa constrictor (only found here), and eating on a tiny island packed with huts that the local Garifuna people call home.  The views were breathtaking.

Unfortunately, I could not bring my good camera with me since the boat ride over can get pretty wet, but it wasn’t hard to get some good shots with my cheap camera phone.

Our tour group had Hondurans and Americans. It was a bumpy ride over to the islands.
The water was beautiful.
The island where we ate lunch (and swam).
You can see the mountains on the mainland.
The water kept changing colors.
Beautiful views everywhere.
We didn’t find a wild one, but a local boy had this baby pink boa for photos.
A cayuco, used for fishing.
The view from the mainland.

    Hi Tim,
What a gorgeous place. I may need to add it to the travel list! I stayed in a Garifuna village a couple of times when I was in Belize. You look happy!
    Take care,
    Julie

Thank you. I frequently heard from other volunteers what great pictures my camera took. I reminded them that person behind the lens had something to do with it!

Great photos! You should send your photos and stories to National Geographic Traveler they would make a wonderful article.

Thanks, Diane. There’s a lot of competition out there. The hardest part for me is organizing and uploading the photos. I need an assistant!

How could I not hold it? There are some things I won’t do (like bungee jumping), but holding a boa was not that hard.
