    Hi Tim,
Your reflections on choice and the need for feeling safe and respected are so critical to learning. I always feel open to taking risks in learning with you, you are a great teacher.~Joni

John Dewey, Maria Montessori, John Piaget, Paulo Freire and John Bowlby are the theorists I like best for Early Childhood Education, and I find more and more their ideas translate well for the upper grades as well. I have never like rewards systems in my classrooms. Extrinsic motivation does not create life long learners. It is a short term behavior mod tool. Engaging students in meaningful, rich learning experiences drives the intrinsic motivation that sparks curiosity, wonder and the desire to "know."

I very much agree, Gail. It's tempting to use rewards at times, but it never really gets the kids to where you want them to be.
