Monte Albán is a short ride from the center of Oaxaca, but it is a world away. It contains the ruins of the old capital of the Zapotec people. Monte Albán dates back to 500 A.D. and at one time 35,000 people lived there.
As I walked around, I was reminded of my visit to the ruins of Teotihuacan last year. Monte Albán contains influences from the Teotihuacan and Mixtec cultures.
I spent one afternoon climbing the ruins, remembering the many temples I climbed with Vicky Ann at Angkor Wat in Cambodia two years ago. Monte Albán is a fascinating and easy place to visit. Here are a few photos.
Tomorrow night I fly home from Mexico, but I’m leaving with plenty of ideas of which parts to explore next. Returning next to Oaxaca is high on the list. There are several more blog posts coming about even more incredible adventures I’ve had and people I’ve met these past two weeks. Stay tuned!

“Our” temples I will never forget, nor the hands that guided me….you certainly made tracks….amazing ruins, lasting memories!
Can’t believe the heights you climbed and, even more so- the lack of rails.
We are such a young nation compared to these cultures. See ya soon!
